My Week in Review: February 22-March 1, 2013

My Dad Is Cooler Than Me and So Is My Niece
This is my niece, not my dad, though he
has a jacket like this, I'm sure.
My dad rides a Harley, though it's a touring bike rather than a chopper or anything like that, and is a member of what my sister and I call a Filipino biker gang. Really, it's a riding club, but we like to tease him. This past week he sent our 2-1/2 year old niece a leather jacket complete with patches. On the front there's an American flag patch and a really cute one that says, "Harley Davidson Girl."

I love riding on motorcycles, but at age 37, Hubs thinks he's too old for one. Sigh. Seriously?

Writing: Kids Week
I took a chance and posted Choices at yeah write earlier this week. I was afraid that I would be judged harshly, but I now realize that I'm my harshest judge. I was overwhelmed at how much support I received from the blogging community, especially since all but a handful of my readers are parents. And I thank you all.

Though I didn't plan it this way, I wrote 2 flash fiction pieces this week, both from a child's point of view. They were well received, as Breaking the Commandments was mentioned by Writing at the Merge in their weekly wrap-up post and Grandpa's Secret was the crowd favorite at the Speakeasy. Both were first times for me. I'm thrilled and surprised, but...woohoo! Yeah, I'm tooting my own horn. ;-)

If you're reading this, I'm guessing you're a blogger. If so, check out yeah write and link up a new post next week! If you also write fiction or poetry, check out the Speakeasy and link up there, too! If you write all of the above, check out Writing at the Merge and link up there. I'd love to see you! Lots to check out!

Bipolar/Anxiety Update
I'm still anxious about leaving my house. However...I am now getting dressed every day. OK, I may just be wearing sweats or yoga pants, but so what -- I'm not in my pajamas. I'm also showering every other day instead of once a week or every other week. Those seem like signs of improvement to me.

Tell me about your week!
And link up with the moonshine grid, while you're at it.

  1. I'm guessing caring for yourself is a big sign of improvement. Or at least I'm hoping.

When I was a teen - before kids - I seriously wanted my own bike. My mom said "not while you're living under my roof" and by the time I moved out Asshat #1 was on his way. They just don't make a car seat that fits on a motorcycle so that dream was shelved. If the Polish Guy and I ever split that is totally going to be my breakup wild card though.

  2. Bee - it was such an amazingly strong writing week for you, congrats! So happy you found yeah write :)

  3. Sounds like a good week! I didn't comment on "Choices" because I got confused about what I wanted to say and then gave up, but I read and loved it. Here's to an excellent weekend!

  4. I just left a reply for you on “My Manic Mind.” You’re
totally right on, and the meds were screwing me up bad. I just had a psychiatrist change them, and I
spiraled out of control BAD. I’m just now starting to come out of it, and I
want to thank you for your support. You are awesome. :) And ... truly, bravo on getting out of your pajamas. I know that seems inconsequential to folks who don't have a mental illness/depression, but I get it. That is a huge improvement, so good for you. :) Sorry I haven't been commenting a lot. Things have sucked for me. I know it will all come around. I did get out of my pajamas today too. No shower, but I did put jeans on. Yay!

  5. And ... what? You are never too old to ride a bike. My dad is still awesomely kicking ass on his Harley at 57. He'll be at Daytona next week.

  6. No way 37 is too old to ride a motorbike! Tell your husband to get his biker groove on ;)
Good for you for writing some flash fiction! I did a few speakeasy link-ups a while ago, but I just don't feel that comfortable in fiction. Maybe I'll try an erotic novel next, lol.
Also - sweats and yoga pants totally count as getting dressed.
Good to read that you are doing better - your post had a very positive vibe!

  7. Bee, it sounds like you've had a great writing week! I'm glad you were able to get dressed as well. I really mean that (I worry that it might sound sarcastic but it isn't meant to.)

  8. I love that idea of a Filipino biker gang.

I'm so glad to hear you're making progress and it's exciting that you definitely DO NOT have writers block. I'll have to get over and read some of your stories.

  9. Oh, yeah. When I start to decline, self-care is the first thing to go out the window, so this is definitely an improvement.

"Breakup wild card" <--awesome! And though I hope you don't break up, you should totally do it if it happens. I'm too short to ride a bike, so I'd probably have to settle for a scooter. lol

  10. Thank you so much! And I'm so glad I found yeah write!

  11. It's definitely been a good week all around. I understand your confusion about "Choices." I was so confused at the time, and although at this point, my husband and I have made the decision not to have kids/adopt, I still feel confused about what happened, and even after writing it out, I'm still not sure how I feel about the situation or myself.

  12. Yay for getting out of pajamas! I'm sure you know how hard it can be sometimes, or maybe even a lot of the time, so go us!

  13. OK, right? My dad is 66 and sometimes I think Hubs is 37 going on 89. And he's 6 years younger than I am! lol -- I hope your dad has a great time at Daytona.

  14. Right??? I've been trying to convince him that we should get a motorcycle. I mean, our car is paid off, so what's the problem? Heehee.

I come from a poetry background, and writing anything longer than a poem was always very hard for me. I took an online personal essay writing course earlier in the year and loved it, and now I'm taking an online fiction writing course. I thought creative non-fiction was more my thing, but I could be wrong. Go write that erotic novel, if it feels right!

Thanks, Kerstin! I really appreciate your support.

  15. Hahaha! I know you don't mean it sarcastically -- it's a huge step for me. This past week has been very good in lots of ways.

  16. I know, right? Here come those Pinoys ready to start some shit. lmao! Nah, they just take trips to various places like Wyoming and other areas near Vegas.

Writer's block is something that hasn't been a problem, that's for sure. I stopped writing for years and years because of anxiety, so I'm glad I've at least overcome that particular anxiety hurdle.

  17. Impressive writing and I think we are probably all our own worst critics!

I do think dressing and putting on makeup even when staying at home makes me feel better. You're making progress!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Congrats on your great week! I have not-wanting-to-leave-the-house tendencies, as well, so I'm glad I'm not alone.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Just to let you know - showering every other day is pretty good around here. Keep plugging away, and I really enjoy your updates!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Beautiful! I'm happy for you--These are all great bits of news. Keep it up (all of it; just make sure the toots are the horn-type.haha)

Just so you know, you're welcome to double-dip your Friday posts; no pressure...I just know a lot of people do, and this post fits with FF, too.

  21. Congratulations on the crowd favorite over at the speakeasy!

  22. Yay. We all have to be our own best cheerleader. If we don't toot our own horns who will? So glad your week and writing went great.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks! It was a great week in many ways. Oh, you definitely are not alone, believe me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks, Kristin! My therapist assured me that showering every other day is on the "normal" spectrum. ;-)

  25. Thanks, Mrs. 4444! And thanks for letting me know that I can double-dip. I'll link up to both next week. :-)

  26. Thank you! It was a surprise and an honor.

  27. We are all our harshest critics, indeed, but it sounds like a great week! And your dad sounds like a total hoot. He seems to know who he is!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yep, this week has been a good one, for sure. Oh, man, my dad is a total hoot!

  29. My brother almost died in a motorcycle crash, so my husband's not allowed to ride any more. He does have his motorcycle license, but he never bought a bike. I did used to date someone who had a bike, and it was a lot of fun to ride with him!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh, wow. I'm glad he's OK. I think this is a mid-life thing for my dad. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, he's OK now. He broke his back, his pelvis and had internal bleeding. It was really scary, and he spent 6 months in the hospital/nursing home. I'm sure your dad is careful. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow, that's really serious. To be honest, I don't know if my dad is careful. My guess is that he is, because his girlfriend falls asleep in the back!
