First and Last Visits to the North Pole

I moved to the US from the Philippines in October of 1972, at the age of 3. Though the Philippines may have "take your photo with Santa" events now, they most certainly didn't when I was a kid. I know this because there would be pictures of me with a Filipino Santa in our family photo albums.

So, I'm in this country for all of 2 months, and my mom decides how cute it would be to get my picture taken with Santa. Apparently, she didn't think this through, because white people were still a new concept for me.

As you can see, I was terrified. Plus, Santa's beard was scratchy and I hated wearing dresses. Bad experience. Very, very bad. This was my first visit to Santa.

Fast forward to 1995. I'm a new cat parent. Mind you, I grew up with dogs and was still learning about cats, like, how different they are from dogs.

I heard that the local Petco was having a "take your pet's photo with Santa" event and I thought, What a brilliant idea! I'll take the Princess to have her picture taken with Santa! Apparently, I didn't think this thing through.

There's a reason, I learned, that people bring their dogs to Petco but not their cats. Cats freak the fu@k out. The Princess doesn't even look like a cat in this photo. Bad experience. Very, very bad. That was my last visit to Santa.

Prompt: 1) Have you made a visit to the North Pole yet? Share your Santa pictures!

    1. It is a cute idea, isn't it? I don't have kids, so I figured I'd take what I could get. Well, I sure learned a lesson!

  5. Sorry to hear of your bad experiences with Santa photos - and for Princess's! They are most excellent photo memories, though.

    1. Haha! I don't think most cats would be. Well, first-time parents, either of babies or furbabies make some mistakes, right?

  7. Oh, you are so so cute! Princess, on the other hand, did not photograph well! I've never make my girls sit on Santa's lap if they don't want to. They only have when it was their idea. :)

    Have a Merry Christmas, Bee!

    1. I'm guessing it's probably better if it's their own idea. That way they won't complain about the long lines, and so on. Obviously, this was not the Princess's idea!

Merry Christmas to you and the Lemon Drop Pie family!

    1. We can't dress Princess up in anything. Our only cat who will tolerate it is Thugdoll. He has reindeer antlers lol! Merry Christmas!

  9. These are classic... well neoclassic, maybe... a cat to Petco, I am rolling over here!

I'm not sure if it's better or worse that you are not hysterically crying in that photo.. probably means you were paralyzed with fear, which is someone worse!

    1. I was paralyzed, definitely. I wanted to make my mom happy and I wanted to appear brave at the same time. I think the following year's photo was better. lol

  10. Love your adorable pics! I have pics of me on Santa's lap and I am ALWAYS crying and have such faces..UGH. My sisters on my 40th put one of those dreaded pics on a carvel ice-cream cake. It was hysterical. I love your kitty! I wanted to do that with my cat when I had her, but she wouldn't go outside! Yes, it runs in the family..no good santa pics.

    1. On a cake! Heehee that's funny! I certainly learned my lesson about taking cats out for anything other than going to the dreaded v-e-t after this day!

  12. The grandmother of one of the little girls I have in my day care is from the Philippines. She calls her grand mom 'Lola'. I think that is so cute!! Even though you look terrified, I still think it's a good picture.

  13. I don't have pictures with Santa when I was a kid, too. (I live in a small city-Baguio City here in the Philippines and the only Santa I can remember when I was a kid was the Indian guy who owns Bombay Bazaar downtown. I swear, you can tell it was him, plus like any "bumbay", he only gave out candies lol

    1. Did they even do these pictures with Santa back then? They didn't have a lot of malls, I know that, just the one in Makati with the Shoe Mart (at least that's the only one I remember, no Megamall). That's where these Santas usually are here.
